Michael Perlitch - Keyboard Tales (1972 Atlantic)

Quite unknown organ driven album. Michael Perlitch plays most of the instruments on the album by himself. Is he America's Michael Oldfield? Maybe not quite... Some may think that he is even more. Maybe. The music is very listenable and if compared to Oldfield's Bells, which I know quite well I think this is very freshly different. The year 1972 may have been same for composing both. How come they have not known each others? I mean Michaels P and O. Perlitch seems to have returned to music again on 2000's and this album is available on CD too. To be honest, most of the pianist-organists on rock era are quite medicore. There is no exeption with these two Michaels. Rock is rock and the real pianists-keyboardists can be found on some other era. You know?

  1. In the 70's & 80's I managed record stores in Phoenix, AZ. Michael Perlitch & Jerry Riopelle were 2 of the main stays on rotation at both KDKB-FM & K-DILL-FM(the outlaw Pirate radio station that even did broadcasts out in the desert). I would get a call from Rick, one of the owners of the store, telling me to let all our customers know that Bill Compton(the top DJ at KDKB) was playing Keyboard Tales that Friday night. We co-sponsored Mr. Compton's show and he did our commercials. Rick and co-owner Scott would go to L.A. a scour the record cut-out warehouses looking for copies of Perlitch & Riopelle albums, both artists had been dropped by their record labels, Atlantic & ABC Records. Rick & Scott even negotiated with both labels for the rights to do a special pressing of their releases, but neither company would give up any control of titles that they didn't even want. I own 2 copies of Keyboard Tales, a used copy that we took in trade at the store, and I got a cut-out copy while working at our warehouse. Folks you've gotta track this one down, "Pete The Bondage Freak" is in a class of it's own.
When you are listening to it, remember this was recorded in 1972! I was unaware that it is available on CD, I will be looking for it on the internet.
